If
you’re living in an urban area, chances are that your living space is small.
Even the most beautiful apartments, in cities, are, for lack of a better word:
cramped. While small spaces have many advantages, such as being easy to clean,
maintain, heat or cool, they come with their set of challenges. Living in a
smaller apartment can feel like being stuck with a small-sized canvas when
you’re setting out to make a painting. And rightly so since our living spaces
are an extension of ourselves and decorating them is lending them our
personality. Smaller apartments also must be de-cluttered every now and then,
which may be a good thing, but also requires you to compromise when buying new luxe décor items.
While it is easy to feel as if your options are limited when decorating (or
redecorating) a smaller apartment, here are some tips for you that will help
you beautify and decorate your home.
Delineating
Spaces
Often
the key to bringing character to a small space is to demarcate it properly. A
large enough hall can be turned into your go-to living space. It can be set up
into an all-in-one living-dining-recreation room with the right decor. You can
use carpets, rugs, or ceiling-mounted
curtains
to make these divisions, and then use specific decor for the areas.
Rethinking
Furniture
Hard
furniture occupies the most space in your home. Instead of opting for bulky and
heavy variants, why not go for compact versions of the same? Thin and
minimalist 3-seaters or modern chairs are good alternatives to full sofa sets.
You can also incorporate space-saving furniture that serves multiple functions, for example, an ottoman with storage. A modern styled ottoman with storage is a wonderful piece of furniture that can be used for
sitting and storing small items. Arbor Décor offers such an ottoman along with
other space-saving furniture items.
Modular
Pieces
Modular
pieces are a boon for small apartments. These can be used to save space or if
you’re just looking for more furniture pieces with more utility for a larger
living space. These include chairs that can have storage space or multiple
shelves, or beds with sliding drawers under them. Convertible and multi-utility
pieces are also something worth considering. These can just be hidden away when
you require more space and pulled out when required. Convertible pieces that
can double as a study space and recreation center, or a dining table in the
kitchen that also works as another counter.
Using
the Corner Space
While
corners are usually seen as wasted space, they do make for some interesting
possibilities. These can be used to anchor furniture with decorative items like
plants or large show pieces. Alternatively, these can be made of use through
more practical ways such as L-shaped sofas or storage shelves.
Using
Mirrors and Glass as Decor
Mirrors
don’t just reflect light, they reflect and multiply images and they also do the
same for spaces. A correctly placed oversized mirror not only gives your space
that luxe décor accent but can also make your space appear twice as
large. However, when using these, make sure that they do not extend to the
floor-lever. Floor to ceiling mirrors should be reserved for larger spaces
unless you are absolutely sure about them. Another way to declutter your space
and make it appear larger is to use clear furniture. See-through chairs and
tables instantly decrease the ‘noise’ in a room and make it appear much bigger
than it is. Larger see-through items such as dining tables have the same
effect, but only greater.
These
are a few hacks and tips to help you decorate your house and turn it into a
home. All the best!
